Participant of the Week

Coming soon!

During the 12-weeks of Move and Improve, we will highlight a participant each week of the program. Last year, we received positive feedback from our participants about this section as it truly offered motivation and to know that we are all in this together.

An example of a participant of the week from the 2011 program is offered below:

Liz Maliga (Home town - Winslow; Age 29)

What is your motivation to “Move and Improve?”
I would like to be as fit as I was a few years ago. I was an avid runner and I felt much better when I was more active. I have a family history of arthritis and I’m hoping to keep myself in the best shape possible to avoid the complications they’ve had.

What is your biggest obstacle to “Move and Improve?”
Pain! I have severe arthritis in my jaw, which means I have chronic headaches. I have pain in other joints as well. The medications I take to control pain make me drowsy and lethargic, which has led to inactivity, which has led to weight gain.

What kind of activities do you engage in to reach your goal?
I would like to run again, but I will need to consult with my doctor to see if this is a safe activity for me. In the meantime, I’ll be doing low-impact cardio at the gym, I’m going to attempt spin class, pilates, snowshoeing (weather-permitting), and strength training.
